As Scotland's leading recycling, renewable energy and sustainable waste partner, Viridor works with 96% of Scottish local authorities, Scotland's public sector and Scotland's leading businesses such as RBS, Scottish Power, BAE Systems and Coca Cola Enterprises.

In addition to operating Scotland’s most advanced network of recycling technologies, Viridor is investing £0.5bn in ‘next generation’ green infrastructure to translate Scottish zero waste policy into practice.

Viridor's proposed road-to-rail transfer station, to be located at the former Freightliner terminal at Sir Harry Lauder Road, Portobello, Edinburgh would be a key link in Scotland's network of zero waste infrastructure, helping transport 300,000 tonnes of residual waste from Edinburgh and the surrounding areas left over after recyclable materials have been removed for reuse or recycling.  The development would create up to 25 new, long term jobs.

Whilst Viridor was disappointed by the decision by Scottish Ministers to refuse planning permission in April 2010 on grounds of visual impact of an industrial building in an industrial location, it was encouraged that a broad range of considerations had been addressed.

Viridor considers that there remains a strong case for next generation recycling and waste infrastructure to support sustainable domestic and commercial recycling and resource management in Edinburgh.

The company is currently re-working plans to take account of points made by the Scottish Government Reporter and looks forward to bringing forward fresh proposals in due course which will be subject to public consultation at that stage.
